Rockland Business Association

From The President's Desk

On Monday, April 4th, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bills for the $15 minimum wage and 12-week paid family leave, thus effectively ending for business the Budget Battle of 2016.

However, we need to carefully monitor the effects of these initiatives as they progress through their phase-in periods and we must continue to voice strong concern over the anti-business rhetoric used to justify them. To that extent our efforts continue.

Clearly, this year, business was not the big winner. But, we were not without our victories.

The RBA – Who We Are Today

The Rockland Business Association (RBA) was founded August 31, 1967, by a group of 40 local business leaders concerned with assisting the county in its growth, both as a business community and in its cultural and social programs.

The goals have been essentially unchanged since its formation. The need for the organization's involvement, however, has intensified over the years as the county has grown from a parochial, semi-rural community into a critically important regional partner. In fact, today the RBA is the most regional of all similar associations in the Hudson Valley, with 24 per cent of its members coming from outside of Rockland.

The RBA is viewed as one of New York's most influential public policy and economic development organizations.

  • The President/CEO of the RBA is one of only two Rocklanders serving as voting members on Governor Andrew Cuomo's Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council.

The RBA has twice been recognized as a Best of Business Honoree by the Small Business Commerce Association; was NY's 2001 Small Business Not-For-Profit of the Year; won a Regional Achievement Award in 2009 from Pattern for Progress and, in 2010, was named The Business Council's First Platinum Level Chamber of the Year.

Among its many significant contributions to the local and regional communities are the issuance of the White Paper of 2012, which changed both the elected and staff leadership that led Rockland in the seven-year fiscal spiral that earned us the title of Most Fiscally Stressed County in NY. The document also changed the course of action regarding the financially draining Summit Park Hospital and County Pharmacy.
